There’s more to refill than you think

Over the last 8 year’s we’ve built World Refill Day into a global movement where individuals, communities, organisations and NGOs get involved to join together and take action.

We know that people want to change, 8 in 10 people are already taking action to reduce their single-use plastic waste, but about 50% of people say they can’t find reusable alternatives where they shop*.

So, this year for World Refill Day we asked our supporters to take on the 5 Day Challenge, and discover new ways to eat, drink and shop with less waste.

With the newly designed Refill Return app in hand, we asked our supporters to make reusable swaps for 5 days, starting on the 16th June, to show that there is more to refill than you think!

What were the results?

We designed the campaign to raise awareness, increase accessibility of reuse, and inspire action – and it’s safe to say we have achieved our aims. We absolutely loved seeing people’s challenges roll in, and were amazed to see people from over 30 different countries globally taking part throughout the week.

And it doesn’t stop there – 80% of participants say they are likely to continue their chosen swaps beyond the #5DayChallenge, meaning we have created lasting sustainable behaviour change.

  • 200 organisations across 30 countries took part in the campaign this year, amplifying the reuse movement with 775 posts.
  • Estimated reach of 2m+ views/listens via media outreach.
  • Estimated reach of 7m+ of the #WorldRefillDay #5DayChallenge #MoreThanYouThink hashtags.
  • 16 World Refill Day Ambassadors took part in the #5DayChallenge, and more than 240 people signed up online to the challenge, preventing more than 1,215 pieces of single-use from waste.
  • Mention of the campaign in the 90 Second Statements at the Senedd Welsh Parliament.
  • More than 18k app users looked for places to live with less waste.
