Refill Llantwit Major
Llantwit Major is proud to be the first town in Wales to have signed up to the Refill scheme. It is an old town steeped in Welsh history and was an ancient seat of learning for the Welsh saints. It is close to the Glamorgan Heritage Coast and with such a beautiful coastline and ancient town buildings is popular with walkers, cyclists and surfers.
Local businesswoman and secretary of The Chamber of Trade, Jacquie Jenkins, was eager to do something about plastic waste having been inspired by BBC’s Blue Planet, and turned to social media to ask people of the town ‘How can we, as businesses, reduce plastic waste? Any ideas please?’. A fellow business owner suggested Refill and in partnership with The Chamber of Trade and Town Council, the scheme was introduced.
The Refill scheme is an ideal opportunity to help our visitors and local people stay hydrated without having to resort to single-use plastic bottles. The response from both traders and the public has been fantastic and this has inspired local organisations to work together on future projects to reduce the use of plastic in our town.
